Read and reflect on verse 1089 from Surah Al-A'raaf: But whenever We removed the plague from them, giving them time to make good their promise, lo, they would break their word....

فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْزَ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ هُمْ بَالِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمْ يَنْكُثُونَ
